Veteran's Benefits
VA benefits can help cover assistance with daily living activities for qualified military veterans, their spouses, or surviving spouses. Program benefits apply whether care is provided at home or in a community living situation like an assisted living facility.
Long-Term Care Insurance
Long-term care (LTC) insurance policies are designed to help cover the costs of that care when you have a chronic medical condition, degenerative disease, or other disabilities. Most LTC policies will reimburse you for care in a variety of situations, including care provided at an assisted living community. However, such plans will not necessarily cover the cost of room and board.
Home Equity
If you own a house or other real estate, it can provide a source of funding for assisted living. For instance, you can rent it out, sell it, get a reverse mortgage, or use your home equity line to establish a line of credit. The best course of action will depend on your family situation and financial needs.
Medicare
It is important to note that Medicare does not cover the cost of long-term care at assisted living facilities. However, in specific situations, Medicare A (hospital insurance) might temporarily pay for some of your loved one’s daily skilled care in the short term. Currently, financial assistance is limited to skilled nursing services for the first 100 days after hospitalization for an acute illness or injury.
Medicaid
In the state of Arizona, the Medicaid office that serves elderly and disabled individuals is the Arizona Long Term Care System (ALTCS). This program provides qualified senior and disabled residents with long-term care assistance, including nursing home care and home and community-based services (HCBS). While ALTCS does pay for medical and care-related services for Arizona residents in assisted living, the program does not cover the cost of room and board.
