Care Homes

Personalized care in an intimate setting

What is a care home?

Care homes—also known as adult family homes, board and care homes, residential care homes, or personal care homes—offer services similar to many larger communities, but in a smaller, home-like setting, usual in a residential neighborhood. They often have caregivers that live on-site and can provide 24 hour care, when needed.

Care homes are a great alternative senior living option for more fragile residents and those that are looking for a more intimate setting, higher staff-to-resident ratio, and home-cooked meals. They are often located in residential neighborhoods and look like just another house.

What services do care homes provide?

This varies depending on the facility’s level of care, but typically care homes provide:

  • 24 hour support/supervision
  • Assistance with daily personal care (bathing & dressing)
  • Medication management
  • Meals
  • Housekeeping and laundry
  • Transportation
  • Some community and recreational opportunities, but usually more limited than larger communities with dedicated activity staff
  • Supervision
  • May include hospice and palliative care

What is the cost for a care home?

Monthly rates for base services vary depending on where you live. Nationally, base rates range between $2,500 and $6,000 per month.

Medicare does not pay for adult care homes. Medicaid may if the home has a Medicaid contract. Many people cover the cost with private funds or long-term care insurance policies. Veterans also have supplemental funding available through Aid and Attendance.
