Finding the right senior living options

Should I move? Should I stay in my home? Anyone can begin a search online, but online networks provide a high volume of the available choices, but cannot match the personalized attention and knowledge of a local senior living/care specialist. Family and friends will often provide suggestions, which can best be considered when channeled through that same local resource. To make the best decision, you need an objective advisor who presents only the options that will help you choose the right community.

In a nutshell, Assisted Living communities are licensed by the state and provide 24 hours of care to those who need that level of care. Senior Independent Living communities often provide meals and housekeeping and may have some care services available. Both settings provide activities and limited transportation.

Medicare is your health insurance and therefore does not provide coverage for rent or care in senior living communities. Once you or your loved one are in a senior living community, Medicare will continue to cover your healthcare needs, such as doctor visits, prescriptions (you pay your co-pay), hospitalizations, and rehab stays.

Yes, the state of Michigan calls these homes Adult Foster Care homes and many serve older adults. We have relationships with these homes throughout the Detroit Metro area and can help connect you to this little known care option if it is a good fit for you or your loved one.

Besides your income and assets, some ways to help pay for assisted living include: VA Aid & Attendance for veterans or their surviving spouse, Long Term Care Insurance, Life Insurance, Reverse Mortgage, Bridge Loan, Help from family members, Government programs. We have resources for many of these options and can help you identify which ones you might qualify for and the basics of how they can help.
